Dry Needling Lincoln, NE

HOW DRY NEEDLING HELPS:

Dry needling is a specific clinical technique used to decrease muscular pain.  The physical therapist uses acupuncture needles to penetrate the skin and muscle to release muscular spasm and decrease pain.  Studies have shown 28% being of patients completely cured of soft tissue pain, 64% partial relief of symptoms, and 8% showed low or no soft tissue pain relief.  We have had good results for people with low back pain, migraines/headaches, hip pain, sciatica, neck pain, and many other soft tissue conditions.  Most insurances cover this treatment.

OTHER TREATMENTS WE PROVIDE:

Stroke Rehabilitation

Many people in the United States suffer from a stroke each year. Coddington Physical Therapy is one of the only outpatient clinics in Lincoln that can offer both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy services at an outpatient setting. We can combine treatments back to back. For example, you may receive occupational therapy for 45 minutes and transfer to physical therapy for the next 45 minutes to work on different skills. This saves time and travel for our patients by offering these services in one location. We have recently began to offer these services and our patients have given us excellent feedback being happy with this program and what it offers.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is very important as we use our hands for almost all activities of daily living. It is very important to regain full range of motion and strength. Common injuries treated by physical therapy include arthritis, tendonitis, and post surgical rehabilitation. Physical therapists are trained to progress exercises and range of motion to prevent re-injury, to decrease pain, and to regain functional use.

ASTYM

ASTYM (A-stim) treatment is a rehabilitation program that stimulates the regenerative healing process of the body. This approach is a non-invasive therapy that works fast and consistently. The ASTYM system rejuvenates muscles, tendons and ligaments. It gets rid of scar tissue problems from old injuries in a fashion previously unimaginable.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy consists of physical therapist applying force to a joint, muscle, or limb to regain normal mobility of soft tissue, muscle, or bone.

Custom Orthotics

Our therapists are trained to make custom fit orthotics (shoe inserts) to realign the foot in proper position to prevent and decrease foot pain. Orthotics are common for various conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Morton’s Neuroma, severe pronation (flat feet), and for athletes with foot pain. Patients may even have knee or hip pain from poor alignment of their feet or ankles.

Total Joint Rehabilitation

Common joint rehabilitation includes total hip, knee, and shoulder replacements. Physical therapists are very educated in progression of strength, range of motion, and pain control following a joint replacement. Many factors for successful rehabilitation are incorporated in our treatment plans such as allowing appropriate time for tissue healing and knowing when and which exercise to perform at the right phase of healing. Pain and edema control are big factors immediately after surgery.

Shoulder Rehabilitation

Shoulder rehabilitation consists of therapy techniques to decrease pain, improve range of motion, and regain strength through proper progression of exercises. A therapist is trained to evaluate muscle imbalances, loss of motion, and may even assess throwing mechanics that may be causing pain in young athletes. Matt Schwager, D.P.T. was fortunate enough to have played 7 years professional baseball mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. He has experience in throwing mechanics and mechanics that can cause pain. Common shoulder injuries may include but are not limited to: tendonitis, rotator cuff strains, tears, shoulder strains, fractures, post surgical rehabilitation following arthroscopic surgery and rotator cuff repair, frozen shoulders, AC separation, subluxations, and dislocations. Matt and Casey both have years of experience working very close with some of the best surgeons in the Lincoln and Omaha areas.

Patellofemoral Pain

Patellofemoral pain is pain that occurs and may be described as general anterior knee pain. This is pain between the knee cap and femur (thigh bone). This may be caused by numerous reasons, and a therapist is educated to evaluate the patient on what is causing these symptoms. Likely causes may be improper footwear, overuse, trauma, bones growing without proper strength in young athletes, weakness of certain muscles, or even your foot alignment. Therapy may consist of strengthening the weaker muscle groups, range of motion, orthotics if needed, rest, and modalities if needed.

Workmen’s Compensation Injury

Workmen’s compensation physical therapy consists of therapy for a particular diagnosis because of a work injury. This could be any type of injury with common injuries such as back strains from lifting at work, trauma, neck pain, or overuse injuries.

SportS injuries

Many injuries occur in sports, as most of have suffered from a sport injury at some time in our lives. Therapists design a sport specific rehabilitation program to help you return to full, pain free competition as soon as possible. We also give direction along with you doctor on proper rest if needed and educated you on when to return to sport activities. The older generation may be playing pickup games, running, playing softball with pain or may have even quit playing a sport due to pain. We may be able to help you return to what you enjoy without pain.

Neck/Back Pain

Neck and back pain may add up to 50% of physical therapy clientele. Back pain may be acute or chronic from a strain, trauma, stenosis, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, bulging disc, etc.. Typical symptoms may include shooting leg pain, loss of motion with activities of daily living, pain when standing, sitting, or walking short or long distances. You may even have pain with just getting out of bed in the morning. Therapist can help you back pain by showing you stretches to regain flexibility of your back and legs. We can also perform techniques for mobility of the vertebrae if needed. Modalities consisting of ultrasound, electrical stimulation, moist heat, or cold packs may help as well, especially with acute pain. Coddington Physical Therapy also offers mechanical traction to decrease pain from bulging discs. Our main goal here is to get you back to functioning without pain as quickly as possible. For you chronic back patients, these exercises prescribed may be part of your daily routine as most people find relief when performing exercises daily or even twice daily.

Neck pain is very common whether it is a bulging disc causing pain, a strain, post surgical fusion, arthritis, or wake up and just cannot move your neck. Therapy consists of treatments designed to return full range of motion, neck strength, decrease your migraine if that is also a symptom, and to decrease pain as quickly as possible. At our clinic we also can perform traction both manually and mechanically to decrease pain from tight muscles or a bulging disc.

Motor Vehicle Injuries

Motor vehicle injuries are unfortunate but occur often. They can leave you with constant pain of any joint and may even cause you to miss work. Our goal is to get you back to the level you were prior to you accident.

ACL Rehabilitation

ACL repairs are sometimes a challenge for a patient. I speak from experience, as I have went through this rehab myself. I have to constantly tell my patients that ACL rehab is more of a marathon than a sprint. You must be patient and allow the tissue to heal even though you knee may be feeling great. Each surgeon has their own protocol for rehabilitation of the ACL. Treatments usually consist of regaining knee range of motion with the assistance of a therapist, regaining strength through exercise, returning to walking normally again, directing the patient on when to remove their immobilizer, and using techniques to decrease swelling and pain.

Loss of Balance

As we age, we may lose upper extremity and lower extremity strength. We also may lose input from our feet from diabetes and loss of sensation in our feet. Losing input from our feet and having slower reaction times as we age, may lead to recurrent falls. Physical therapy my help by using exercises to regain upper extremity and lower extremity strength. Good strength of the lower extremities may help prevent falls, by being able to recover from loss of balance. Exercises may consist of things such as standing on foam or single leg standing to challenge your balance and proprioception. Our therapists have had good luck with retraining your body to react quickly to prevent falls combined with lower extremity strength. We can also advise assistive devices if you appear to be at great risk for falling.

McConnell Taping

McConnell taping has been an effective method of treatment for pain used to increase stability of a joint and improve function. Common taping areas are shoulders, knees, and ankles. This technique is most commonly used to treat patients with patellofemoral pain. Taping stabilizes the patella (knee cap) in the proper position to prevent anterior knee pain caused by inappropriate mobility of the knee cap.

Pre Operative/ Post Operative Therapy

Pre operative therapy may consist of therapeutic exercises to regain range of motion and strength of a joint prior to surgery. It is very important to have full motion and good strength prior to surgery to make rehabilitation after surgery less difficult. Therapists may educated you on walking with crutches or on what to expect after surgery. Some surgeons will have the patient attend a therapist to educate the patient on exercises to perform immediately after surgery. Post operative programs focus on regaining strength, range of motion, decreasing edema if present, and decreasing pain to return the patient to activities of daily life as quickly as possible. Therapist are trained to progress the patient with the appropriate exercises to prevent injury.

Pregnancy Care

Pregnant women often suffer from low back pain and sacroiliac pain. During pregnancy, hormones released cause loosening of the ligaments to allow for child birth. Moist heat, massage, and exercises may decrease pain. These techniques will not effect your child in any way. The treatments are designed for pain control.

TMJ Pain

Temporal mandibular joint pain may be preventing you from opening your mouth to chew or to talk. Physical therapy will often help to regain functional use of you mouth decreasing pain and allowing you improved motion to eat or talk. Dentist often will fit this patient type with a moth splint to wear at night to help prevent grinding of teeth that may be causing pain. Treatments may include manual techniques to regain motion of the jaw, heat or ice, electrical stimulation, massage, ultrasound, stretching exercises, or medication applied to the muscle by use of electric current..
